Swatted

I have just submitted a Firefox bug that Gústi and I came across the other day. It took me a while to figure out what was causing it but it hit me this evening and I've managed to reproduce it every single time after I narrowed it down.

It seem's that the method of an alternative blank stylesheet I've been using (href="") isn't the best one out there. It works on Internet Explorer but makes Firefox re-request the URL. This is obviously bad for both resource reasons, not to mention that any GET submitted data will be submitted twice. Then there is the fact that unintelligent counters and logparsers will be a bit off. :-)

So, anyway… I'm having a bit of an open-source-community-zen moment right now and feeling good about the world before I change all the pages under my control that will cause the error.

Oh, and I still think you should all go and download Firefox right now because it's lightyears ahead of the long deceased Internet Explorer.

It seems that according to the team that this isn't a bug at all. I still don't get why they want to re-download the base URL when this happens as it will obviously exist in memory? The other way it wouldn't cause any trouble when hit. I doubt anyone would ever use this as a feature because as I mentioned, other browsers don't behave the same way. Do I keep pushing or leave it alone?

  1. I say respectfully register your arguments on the bug :) but assume that they won't be accepted, and modify your stuff accordingly. Sounds like they have pretty set opinions on the matter. Does javascript:void() work in that context? Else just use a blank.css with a really long configured Cache-Control: max-age=XXX

  2. I have decided not to follow up on it... It seems like they have already seen it, decided things should be this way, and it's not worth anybody's time debating about it. I'd rather have them fix the critical stuff.

This will no doubt get submitted again and they will deal with it if need be... In the meantime I will just have to stop writing faulty pages ;-)
